Ed: Our northern most member Craig Wallace based in Inverness travels across to the Western Isles for fell running.
A couple of results from recent hill races:
25 June, Fyrish hill race (Evanton, near Dingwall) about 12.3 km, 400m climb
time: 1:14:17
position: 23/28
A nice sunny day for a run up and down to the monument. Mostly on reasonable forest tracks, so fairly fast running.
9 July, Glamaig hill race (Sligachan, Skye)
about 6 km, 770m climb
time: 1:24:04
position: 59/105
Probably the toughest race I have ever done!
Started from the Sligachan Hotel, then running across boggy heather, up
steep grass slopes, and up steep scree. More like crawling/scrambling in
places. Some good views from the summit, though it was in a bit of a
cloud and starting to rain. Then a rather scary descent – straight back down
the same way, sliding down the scree, and slipping on the wet grass. My
glasses were getting covered in rain, I couldn’t really see where I was going.
Now got a few minor cuts and bruises. Good fun anyway, and a nice couple
of days camping on Skye.
