Pilgrim Challenge 2014

Alex Portwine reports back on last weekend’s back to back ultras!

1st & 2nd Feb 2014 – Pilgrim Challenge – 66 miles

Last weekend I took part in my first multi-day ultra, running 66 miles of the North Downs Way. The race was run on and out and back route, starting from near Farnham, stopping overnight at Merstham 33 miles away, and following the route back to the start on the second day. The North Downs Way was clearly marked, and so navigation was easy, even for me!! What wasn’t easy was the conditions underfoot. The mud was simply relentless. I find it okay walking up hills and running the rest on a challenging trail, but when even the flat sections are a mire it starts to wear at you mentally. Luckily I only fell a few times, once in a swollen stream and got a soaking, and I find falling over hilarious, so it actually jollied me up a bit!! The camaraderie was fantastic, and the organisation of the whole event was spot on. I would recommend anyone to try one of XNRG’s other events, as they are great value for money.
