Peter Simpson reports on only his 3 & 4th Park Runs in nearly 2 years it has been running.
Normally busy campaigning on a Saturday so not many opportunities during the year, cross country championship events also held on Saturdays take priority. Unfortunately when I had planned to do the Park Run on 17 Dec it was very icy and took risks cycling the 3 miles to Willen Lake where it is held. Not the best ice skater wearing running shoes, I held back or ran round the dangerous spots. Despite the conditions, there was still a good turnout of 152 and a few sub-18 mins otherwise a personal worst for me of 23.13.
After a Christmas break I was back for the New Year’s Eve run and was almost certain to be faster. Apparently the Christmas eve run had a record turnout of 309, I guess not much shopping left for these runners. Back to NYE, I thought I was near the front on the start line but with a narrow path ahead it was easy to get boxed in by slower runners. With so many regulars, the competition has increased over the period it has been running. Once we start climbing towards the canal towpath the runners begin to spread out and I am able to get into my normal stride. Gradually overtook many runners and as I started the loop around the southern lake there were comments from a group of runners who when they saw me pass, started a discussion on the theme of vegans being slim.
In the final push for the line I did lose one place but cannot win them all! I turned out to be 38 / 281 in 21.34, 1.39 faster than the icy run of 17th Dec.
