Kate's First Marathon, 10/4/11

Ed: Kate reports after successfully completing the popular Brighton Marathon where VRUK had 5 runners, following on from 3 members in the Sussex Marathon at Battle the previous week. Anna Finn also ran the Paris Marathon on the 10th, result to come. Four more members will be running in the London Marathon this weekend 17th April. Marathon season!

This was a wonderful marathon, and I loved every minute of it (with hindsight – forgetting the pain of some of the latter miles!). The route was amazing, it covered varying settings and so did not get at all boring. It started in a park, took in the Brighton Pavillion, up past Roedean and some tranquil sea views, into some beautiful countryside; and then in contrast, the other end of the marathon involved running around a powerstation, before finally running along the seafront from Hove to finish at Brighton Pier. The first twelve miles had a lot of hills which I wasn’t expecting, and the heat was apparently 23 degrees. Many people said the temperature affected their running times, but surprisingly I did not find the sun so bad as I thought I would. This was my first marathon, and I was also trying to raise a bit of sponsporship money for The Vegan Society. It was a great experience!
