Thanks to Nicola Cowee for suggesting the date of the meet-up. Leading up to the 21 March I had not heard much more so thought there would only be a few of the vegan runners but turning up just in time (due to problems on the rail line to Tring from Milton Keynes) the field of runners were already lining up and I could see from a distance several vegan runner tops and in fact there were 10 of us. The turnout was helped by the recent increase in membership in the Watford area as well as most of members in the area coming along. The event is more like a 5K hill run as well as totally off-road with the toughest climb in the first 1K and a similar descent around 3K.
Members were also encouraged to meet with the promise of a post-run vegan breakfast at the Anusia Cafe (veggie) in the nearby High Street. We all continued to wear our vegan runners kit in the cafe and there most of us remained until after 12 noon.
For the details of the results visit the Tring parkrun website. You may be surprised to learn that member Mick Smith from Northamptonshire and in the age group V65-69, was our first runner to finish in 22.31 (or thereabouts) and easily set an age group record for the course (by about 2+mins), the event only started early last November. Our 2nd runner, Sebastian from Watford was a few seconds behind and with partner Anna, they cycled to the parkrun and back to Watford.
In fact we now know there were 11 of us with 2nd claim vegan Stephen Burgess finishing in 2nd place overall with an amazing PB of 18:50 – well done Stephen! (edit by NikW 29th March)
At a later date we hope to arrange a similar meet at the new parkrun in Watford in Cassiobury, home to many of the annual events such as the half marathon, 10K and Autumn Challenge multi-terrain 5 miles. The cafe there is also suitable for vegans
