Dave Arnold reports back on some excellent Vegan Runners UK representation at the inaugural Brighton & Hove 10 Mile.
‘Another busy Brighton weekend of Vegan Running. Chris Stevenson and daughter Astrid donned their Brighton & Hove vests on Saturday to help kick off the cross country league season at Goodwood, both turning in great performances.
Sunday, a brand new race using predictably familiar seafront roads, the Prom and of course passing the iconic Royal Palace. Interestingly the start and finish area was on Hove Lawns rather than Maderia Drive that regularly plays finish line for the bigger city centre races, 10k, Half Marathon and Full marathon…not to forget the weekly midweek triathlons by Btrs Race Series! I suspect that if this race grows in size it too will utilise Maderia Drive under the watchful eye of Steve Overt (statue of).
First VR home was newcomer Hob in about 1:05 (I think). Possibly running another PB was Miss PB herself – Paula Blackledge who’d teamed up with Martin smashing out steady 7 min / miles. They were joined at two miles by Dave who’d missed both the entry deadline AND the race start! Not surprising in such a vegan friendly city a team of 3 vegans working together got plenty of good crowd support! (1:10:10 ish). Not sure of the times of calf-injured Goncalo Melo and a second newbie VR Hannah. Graham Godden placed somewhere around 20th in 56:13 with no one asking him about his protein sources!! Cindy Styles arrived just about in time to cheer the runners in and join in the post race eating and drinking, courtesy of the vegan friendly catering ladies in their van.
Next meet up is Sat 31st Oct, Hove Park Parkrun where in celebration of World Vegan Day we’re hosting a stall giving out vegan cheese samples (thanks Vegusto!) & vegan café vouchers (thanks Loving Hut!) and assorted nibbles and literature.
On Sun 1st Nov we’re at Stanmer Park for the Vegan Virtual Race.
Hope you all had great runs this weekend…look forward to hearing your news from around the country!’
