Irchester, Helsby, Ruislip, Vikings and XC

Last weekend was another busy one for VRUK members, I see we’re no longer going to be able to fit it all on one page – Sidney’s Stubbington Green blog is here, Verna and John’s Box Hill reports are here.

Alex Portwine had a fast run at the Viking Coastal marathon, she reports:

“Ran Viking Coastal Marathon today in Kent…5th overall, 2nd woman, and a new PB! (That sounds impressive, but it was a small field, and some of them had run the same course the day before as well…but I’m still very pleased with that result!) Hope you all had a good day racing and running out there!”

Simon Dally continues enjoying the challenge of XC mud:

“I did the South East Lancs League Cross Country today at Leigh, finished 12th in 37:30, although I got mixed up with someone else in the results again! I ran much better than last week. The course was about 6 miles, tricky in places but with faster sections too. Had to work hard to maintain my position at the end. Cross country is so very, very hard …”

Barry Wheller encountered a specimen of carnivore ignoramus at Helsby and left him in his wake:

“I got 2 hours 5 mins 45 in the Helsby Half, a new PB by 8 minutes, but what really made my day was trouncing the hilarious bloke who asked if I missed eating real food and was looking forward to my carrot at the end. Do you think it would have been childish to wait at the end just for him to finish and give him the thumbs up?”

Peter Simpson had a good run at Irchester after a decent warm-up on the bike getting there:

“Irchester Country Park (5K/10K/15K) multi-terrain – ran the 10K following the 1 hour 20 mins cycle journey. Only just made it to the start line, with some of the heaviest conditions on the course just ahead. With appropriate shoes the soft / wet surface was enjoyable others in their road shoes not so! Using it as build-up to the Southern XC next week. Lost some places on the harder paths otherwise pleased with overall consistency, finishing in 49.02 and 58 / 197.”

Three members met up for a trail run in Ruislip Woods last Sunday, hopefully the start of a regular session. If you are interested in joining let me know via the blog contact form and I’ll pass on your details to organiser Rafal who reports:

“Today me, Siobhan CG and Shelley van der Berg got together for the first for the long distance training session. First of many I hope. I don’t want to say Vegan Runners training session because we didn’t get authorization but we’d like to make it a monthly event and hopefully more people will join. We did about 20k at a very relaxed pace, got ourselves covered in mud and generally had fun. We’re planning next training on the 23rd of February so if anyone is interested please pm me here and i will add you to the group email. The location is Ruislip Woods atm although it might change if there will be other suggestions.”

Jenny McNamara continues placing well following on from her Roseberry Topping win in December, some of us would be over the moon to be 7th in anything 😉

“11/01/2014 Wainstones night race 10k (6.75 miles) Time: 1.23.01 3rd lady

19/01/2014 Skyline 10K (10.8k) Time: 56.36 7th lady (tough day at the office! less racing more recovering needed I think. How do you do it, Matt Woodman?!)”
