Hard to beat… Crychan Forest Trails fell race

We hear from Helen Fines who was beaten only by two men in a new Welsh Fell race – she’s one tough cookie!

It’s been a while since I went out in the VRUK vest as I’ve had alot of championship counter races for my first claim fell club Calder Valley. I’m doing ok individually but our team (British and English winners the last 2 years) has been decimated by injury. Anyway… I did a low key race in Wales last Sun.. (my birthday!), which was the Crychan Forest Trails race. It’s a new fixture with numerous junior races, a short race of 4m, and the one I did at 8m/1600ft. Being new it attracted a small (but perfectly formed) field.. over a beautiful course, lovely woodland with some good short climbs and a bit of open moorland. Two very fast blokes quickly disappeared leaving the rest of us to fight it out.. I ran along behind the next group of blokes as they were going quite quick in the first half, but they started to fade and female endurance won out as I overtook them gradually… 3rd overall, but 8 minutes behind the male winner… yikes! No photos, although the mayor and mayoress of Llandovery gave out prizes, complete with official gold regalia. And I think I might have recruited a new member.. [ooh! Ed] Next stop Holme Moss (17m/4500ft) in the Peak District.. then Scotland..
