A great report from the irrepressible Mr. Arnold – good to see him back. Hope to see him wearing his pants outside his wetsuit now that he is a leading super-vet!

Hiya!!
Waterlooville (Hampshire) is my hometown and it’s first ever triathlon (600m, 40k,10k)back in 1992 was the first sporting event I ever entered and was always a special event in the calendar for me. It’s not been held in the last 8 years but was resurrected this year. Apart from a few low key short distance freebie evening tri’s on Brighton beach this was my first triathlon since 2007. Quite apart from it being a nostalgic day for me I found it tougher than ever. In warm up my gear shifters broke off my trusty steed of a bike (repaired with 4 cable ties!), I forgot to tie up my swim trunks and so many times on the run I could have just had a sneaky little walk as it hurt so much. But there’s something about wearing that Vegan Runners vest that just keeps me driving on. And just as well too.
I was a bit disappointed with my performance, particularly the run, 9th overall, but rather surprised by the results. They announced me as 2nd Male Vet. I managed to persuade the organisers that I was in fact, sad to say, a ‘super’-vet. And it turned out that I had actually won that category …… by …..just 1 second! 2:10:41 So pleased that I had battled on and not been tempted to ease off at any point….how gutting that would have been!!!
