Ed: On my way to Birmingham by train I thought it was going to be a further 1 to 1 training session with newcomer Allan Green following the 19 June session however, an encouraging message arrives from Anna Wittkop who will be attending her first session. Like the 19 June, there was some kind of fayre going on in the park so it was quite busy with almost as many wildfowl present in and around the ponds.
It was a fairly warm day as one would expect at this time of year as we set off for a warm-up loop around the park. We followed this by the point-to-point interval sessions mainly along the paths close to the River Rea. We also took the opportunity of holding one interval around the adjoining sports field with no football taking place in the close season.
Back at the park we took the opportunity of a slow run taking in the fayre where we noticed there were some animal activities, a dog show in particular organised by the RSPCA. There seemed to be a lot of sporting activities being held so we added to the diversity and advertised Vegan Runners.
We finished the session with a 3/4 loop around the park and retired to the cafe in the community building that seemed rather quiet with more people outside and at the fayre. When earlier Allan ran through the fayre he was noticed by other sports colleagues and they came over and joined us for a drink.
My next destination was Sutton Park to explore a particular area north of the railway line that cuts through the park. With my fold-up bike present I was able to get round a little quicker apart from the long climb where i had to walk. Got a bit lost later going for a long walk in the woods but no panic with roads not too far away. Met a couple of vegans who noticed my VRUK t-shirt and we had a long chat.
Next event for the West Midlands area if you are interested in meeting up or running the event is the Wolverhampton half marathon on 4 September, scheduled to start 9.15am from West Park. Other events from the same start line include the marathon and relay. From a separate start line at 9.05am is the 19.4K cycle ride.
